I received a phone call this week that really surprised me and inspired me to be more mindful of those within my everyday life.
One of my fifth grade students from years ago called up to tell me she was graduating this next week. That was the most challenging year I ever had teaching when I really wanted to quit. This student mentioned that the poetry recital I had her do every week really helped build some confidence in herself at a time when there was so much going on in her life.
Her mother was a great help that year in helping the entire class see what they could do to build confidence in themselves. Unfortunately, her mother had made some poor choices earlier in her life and ended up having to serve time in federal prison halfway through that year and this girl had to move away to live with her father. She wanted me to know that classroom was a place she felt successful in her life.
So, I guess it matters that I try my best no matter how many challenges arise because someone will be affected by what I do or don't do.
